From Community Football to the Botswana Premier League
Tonota Football Club is a story of patience, perseverance, community pride and an unwavering belief in what is possible. Founded in 2006, the club began its journey as a football institution rooted in the village of Tonota, building its identity through years of competition, development and determination.
For two decades, Tonota FC steadily established itself within Botswana’s football landscape. The journey was not always straightforward. Like many community-based clubs, the team had to grow through the lower divisions, developing players, strengthening its organisation and building a loyal following along the way.
Known affectionately as “Sepondo” Tonota FC became increasingly recognised as a competitive force in the First Division North. The club’s rise was built on consistency, discipline and a growing belief that Tonota could eventually compete at the highest level of domestic football.
THE ROAD TO THE TOP
The breakthrough came during the 2025/26 First Division North campaign.
From the opening stages of the season, Tonota FC demonstrated that it was serious about promotion. By December 2025, the team was sitting at the top of the First Division North table with 32 points from 12 matches and an unbeaten record, signalling a determined push for the elite league.
The momentum continued into the new year. Tonota remained at the summit as the promotion race intensified, displaying the consistency required over a long and demanding campaign.
Then came the defining moment.
In March 2026, Tonota FC were crowned First Division North champions, securing automatic promotion to the Botswana Premier League for the 2026/27 season. The achievement marked the first time in the club’s history that Tonota FC had reached Botswana’s top flight.
After 20 years of existence, a dream that had been pursued since the club’s formation in 2006 had finally become reality.
2026: A NEW CHAPTER
Tonota FC entered the 2026/27 FNB Premiership as one of Botswana football’s newest top-flight clubs. Their promotion represented more than sporting success; it was a landmark achievement for the Tonota community and a testament to the club’s long-term commitment to football.
The promotion also reflected the growing strength of the club’s structure, management, coaching team, players and supporters. Ahead of their Premier League debut, Tonota FC began strengthening the squad with experienced players as it prepared for the demands of elite football.
The club has made it clear that promotion is not intended to be the end of the journey. Tonota FC chairman Tumelo Toteng has spoken of ambitions that extend beyond simply surviving in the Premier League, with the club setting its sights on eventually competing in CAF competitions.
